Using Humanoid Robots to Convey Rehabilitation Therapies to Individuals with Intellectual Disability

REHABIBOTICS is a project that aims to increase the quality of life among individuals with Intellectual Disability (ID) using robotics. It is a collaborative research between Intelligent Robotics and Computer Vision Group (IRCV) at Rovira i Virgili University, Tarragona, and Instituto de Robótica para la Dependencia, Sitges. Project REHABIBOTICS will be deployed at Ave Maria Foundation, which is a residential care facility for individuals with ID.

 

The project has three main objectives:

Analysis of the requirements for efficient cognitive stimulation by humanoid robots

Learning and adaptation of the attention/emotional state of the participant by the robot during cognitive stimulation activities using physiological cues and RGB-D videos

Development of proprietary solutions for effective cognitive rehabilitation

These people need a professional or volunteer per chair for their movements inside or outside. This circumstance limits the number of times they can enjoy walks, outings to nature, etc. and supposes discrimination with respect to their peers. With the project, more than 3,500 hours a year are recovered from a caregiver that can be used for more useful jobs for our users.

The benefits of project REHABIBOTICS can be used to provide an effective cognitive rehabilitation among individuals struggling with a wide range of clinical concerns, including kids with Autism Spectrum Order (ASD), individuals with ID and people with dementia.

The project has achieved the identification of different categories of interaction between robots and people with ID, designed strategies for these activities, architecture based on feedback of “Social Assistance Robotics (SAR)” and the use cases for robots and the first base of Multimodal annotated data from individuals with ID recorded in a near-real world setting for analysis of emotional states.
